Flat-Plane Crank
A crankshaft configuration where the crank pins are arranged at 180 degrees, typical of racing V8s.
In a flat-plane crank V8, the firing order alternates evenly between cylinder banks. This improves exhaust scavenging efficiency and allows the engine to rev much faster and higher than a traditional cross-plane V8 (which has a 90-degree offset and requires heavy counterweights). The trade-off is increased vibration (NVH), which is why it is usually reserved for exotic cars like the Ferrari 458, McLaren V8s, and the Corvette Z06.
